About Fremantle

Our Community

The state electorate of Fremantle includes the suburbs of Fremantle, South Fremantle, Beaconsfield, White Gum Valley, Hilton, Rottnest Island, North Coogee and parts of Spearwood, Hamilton Hill, O'Connor and East Fremantle.

The Fremantle community is defined by its history, diversity and uniqueness. Our harbour city has been home to workers on the docks and in the factories, migrants from all corners of the globe, artists and activists. Fremantle has always been an inclusive community – except the divides on Sharks v Souths Derby day!

Fremantle has always been a bustling centre of trade and commerce, and the Port continues to open up WA to the world. Our idyllic placement where the Indian Ocean meets the Swan River has led to the development of world-class tourism and hospitality businesses. Sustainability is something that area businesses have taken very seriously.

The seat of Fremantle is full of passionate people. They are concerned about the fairness of their society, about preserving the uniqueness of their community and celebrating its history and planning for its future.

The people of Fremantle are concerned about their local public schools and hospitals, about the challenges posed by climate change, and the inequality created by the rising cost of living.

Whether it is down at the Freo Markets on a Sunday, walking along the Swan River in East Fremantle, watching the kids play footy down at Dick Lawrence Oval or netball down at Gibson Park – Fremantle is a wonderful community to live in and one I have been privileged to be a member of for the past twenty years.

I’d like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we meet today. I would also like to pay my respects to Elders past and present and future custodians and Elders of the nation. In particular the Whadjuk Noongar people, as the first Nations owners of the land.
